Salary: Grade 3 £17,391 to £18,319 (Bar at £17,972) per annum pro rata

We are looking to recruit 6 new cooks within primary schools, secondary schools and academies in Manchester. 

Manchester Fayre is the catering arm of Manchester City Council and the school meals provider for over 100 primary schools, secondary schools and academies in the City. As a school meals provider, we prepare and serve around 27,500 school meals each day: Manchester Fayre’s uptake of school meals is well above the national average with 69.7% of children having a school meal in primary schools and 67.5% of children at secondary schools. We pride ourselves in always going the extra mile in everything we do, from attention to customer care, to supporting the health of our customers by exceeding nutritional standards for school meals. 

You will be required to manage all aspects of a school catering service in the absence of the Unit Manager. They will work on a mobile basis and must be flexible in their your work location as this could change from day to day, at a moments notice. Therefore, you must be able to work under pressure and capable of easily adapting to working in new environments. 

As well as having extensive knowledge and skills for providing a mass catering provision, it is imperative that you have exceptional people skills and high standards of customer service. You will be required to supervise and motivate a team of catering staff and liaise with senior school management.

It is paramount that the service provided is customer focused, therefore, you must ensure that you and all team members are courteous, responsive and remain professional at all times.

On a daily basis you will be required to prepare, cook and serve between 120-400 school meals in accordance with service standards, service level agreements and legislative requirements. In addition to this they may also be required to provide an early morning breakfast club provision, which could be for between 20-50 customers. You must adhere to pre-planned menus and ensure the offering meets operational needs, budgeted food costs and customer expectations. 

The minimum requirement for the role are as follows:-
  • Operational experience of catering facility, where high standards of food quality, service and attention to detail are paramount.
  • Hold a qualification in food preparation and cooking at NVQ level 2 or an equivalent qualification.
  • Must hold Foundation Food Hygiene Certificate or an equivalent qualification and have knowledge of health and safety regulations.
